The Magic Candle

Nature is the greatest teacher.

The beautiful Heath next to where I live is my trusted advisor. Devoid of a language than names and separates it simply creates in the most joyful and natural way – it gives its gifts unconditionally. There is no confusion and there are no mistakes and there is no need for rules or preconditions.

It nourishes me and shows me that to seek for anything outside of my own natural mind is a stressful way to live. It shows me that when I am disconnected from the natural flow of life I carry a harsh, unforgiving and fearful world around in my head wherever I go. It shows me that this fearful world is never real outside of my thoughts.

When this is seen then suddenly our minds become a space that can contain any idea. We discover that we can live and create with the same ease and joy as a flower opening to catch sunlight.

Open to life being something amazing and mysterious.

A few months ago my wife’s nephews, Herbie, Harvey and Zac came to stay with us. They are aged between 8-10. They are really great kids and still open to life being something amazing and mysterious.

I’ve often spoken to them about how the Heath is a great teacher - how when we stay open and allow the creative spirit of nature to flow though us, we are given wonderful gifts and insights into life.

Ask the Heath a question and receive an answer.

They asked me if we could ask the Heath a question and receive an answer. I told them that of course we could and they sat down with furrowed brows thinking of a question. And after some deliberation they agreed that we would ask the Heath,

“What is the most important thing in the world?”

I thought it was an absolutely brilliant question and I’d played no part in coming up with it. It was something that I wanted to know too!

Just to add to the excitement, they wanted to go onto the Heath really early when it was still dark. So after my wife, Esther finally got them to bed all we could hear was chatting about the pending adventure.

They woke me up at 5.30am: a time I very rarely see. I must admit I had imagined a little later but who am I to get in the way of a quest of such importance?

The Heath was veiled in a shimmering mist.

We quickly got dressed in warm clothes and headed out into the silent morning. The Heath was veiled in a shimmering mist and looked more akin to something out of King Arthur’s magical realm.

It was cold and muddy and the smell of vegetation was pungent. The mist drifted like a beautiful flowing geometry – free yet infinitely precise.

As we trekked deeper the kids diligently scanned for any evidence of an answer to our question. I had no idea what would transpire and I love being in this space of creative openness.

We spotted something strange.

Then, as we approached a small clutch of ponds we spotted something strange. It appeared as if there was a small glowing light in the middle of one of the ponds.

It was so peaceful and so deserted. I had a clear feeling that this was just fine. But I checked in with the kids to see if they were cool to go and investigate. A stupid question, they were jumping up and down with excitement.

We walked as close as we could get.

We walked as close as we could get to the edge of the pond. It was surrounded by thick mud. Close up we saw that the pond was only a few inches deep, more like a Giant puddle.

But to our amazement right in the dead centre of this circle of muddy water was a pure white candle burning brightly!

It looked as if it had just emerged from the mud and just been lit. We looked around to see if anyone was around and there were just birds and trees.

I tried to work out how anyone could have put the candle right in the middle without sinking up to their thighs in mud. And yet there were no footprints to suggest that anyone had put the candle there.

Therefore we all concluded that it had simply appeared to answer our question, “What is the most important thing in the world?”

So I asked the kids what they thought the answer was as they stared amazed at the burning candle.

Eventually, after a long silence, Zac said, “Light is the most important thing in the world.” And this seemed like the perfect answer.

We made our way back home where Esther had mugs of hot tea waiting for us and I must admit that even I had to go and think this one through.

Our natural creativity is always present.

The excitement and wonder of opening to our natural creativity is always present: it is always available. And when we allow ourselves to connect with the world in this way we get extraordinary results.

Importantly, we discover that we can create things that we never thought possible – that indeed weren’t possible from a limited way of thinking.

In the spirit of this creative adventure…

If you are in the process of creating a business…

If you are already running a business but looking for a new injection of inspiration…

If you would love to get an idea out into the world so that your gifts can work their magic…

I invite you to join myself and my co-creator of intuitive business and marketing, Damien Senn on our ‘Dream Your Marketing’ monthly creative surgeries.

Hi Davide

I just got back from a fantastic walk through Marble Hill Park and along the Thames, enjoying the experience of the sunlight sparkling off the water and the magic of the trees. I felt that nature was speaking to me, letting me know that we can all sing our unique song and it isn't about it being a performance, just the song we sing to the world. And the first email I read on getting home is this completely magical one. Thank you so much - I want to go straight back out there!

Love Francesca
